YOUR CHILD WILL GROW WITH EVERY CLASS!
Little kids are like sponges. They absorb things quickly and easily – far more easily than we do as adults. In fact, parents can sometimes see a difference in their kids after just one martial arts class. Each additional class they attend increases their knowledge and growth.
Our Dragons program is made for 5-6 year olds, usually in kindergarten. Classes focus on impulse control, gross motor skills, and following directions, so kids build confidence and skills that carry into school and other activities. Dragons is the next step after our Ninjas class, and after about 10-13 months, most kids are ready for Juniors.
Our Ninjas and Dragons program is developed and led by Mrs Sonja Scott, who holds a degree in early childhood education and has over 25 years of experience teaching preschool age children.
Not only are they getting healthier as they learn martial arts, they’re also learning the value of self-discipline and respect. When you enroll your child at Taekwondo America of Richmond, you’re giving them much more than the physical skills we teach. You’re giving them the opportunity to thrive.

SEE HOW Taekwondo America of Richmond STACKS UP
Explore our comparison between martial arts and traditional sports to see why martial arts could be a more beneficial and fulfilling choice for your kindergartener’s overall growth and development.
Traditional sports sometimes focus more on physical prowess and less on the holistic development of a child, potentially neglecting important aspects like self-control, emotional intelligence, and personal character development.
Team selections and competitive play can sometimes lead to exclusion or benching of less skilled players, which can be disheartening and impact their enthusiasm for physical activity.
A strong focus on winning can overshadow the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship, and simply enjoying the game, which are vital aspects of sports for young children.
In team sports, individual attention from coaches can be limited, which may hinder the personal skill development and confidence of 5-6 year olds who are still learning to follow directions in a group.
Martial arts is a great way for young kids to build large motor skills, balance, strength, and flexibility in an enjoyable and dynamic setting.
As children master new skills and earn belts, their confidence soars. This sense of achievement helps build their self-esteem and belief in their abilities.
Regular practice of martial arts helps kids learn to control impulses and concentrate, skills that are transferable to all areas of life, including kindergarten and school.
Children learn to respect their instructors and peers, fostering an environment of mutual respect. They also develop better listening and direction-following skills, which are crucial for learning and social interactions.
LIFELONG CHARACTER AND SUCCESS TRAITS
Your kids’ everyday friends aren’t the main concern anymore when it comes to character development. Now you have to worry about all the negative and harmful influences that the internet can introduce into your children’s lives.
The true benefit of Taekwondo America of Richmond are the character and success traits that are developed through martial arts training, starting with our Dragons class.
Through learning the skills and techniques of martial arts, to the guidance and inspiration of our instructors and the positive social interaction with their fellow classmates, your kids will develop a whole list of skills, from following directions and impulse control to focus and confidence.
FITNESS DISGUISED
Face it. Between the foods we eat and the constant sitting and staring into screens and devices, many kids aren’t getting enough regular exercise.
Our Dragons martial arts classes are full exercise routines disguised as a boatload of fun! That’s because they are jam packed with activities, games and drills that build large motor skills, balance, and coordination while disguising the repetition of training.
Of course it’s important for your kids to exercise and wear themselves out – they stay healthy, sleep well, and develop their minds and bodies. But just as important, our classes will help develop at a young age the physical habits they need to grow into healthy adults.
SELF-DEFENSE FROM PREDATORS AND BULLIES
We never want our kids to have to use these skills in modern life, but every good parent still wants their kids to be safe.
That’s why Taekwondo America of Richmond is very serious about teaching your kids the skills needed for self-protection, from the neighborhood bully to a stranger on the street (and so much more), in a way that fits their age.
But knowing how to defend oneself is only half the battle. Our classes teach your child the respect and self-discipline needed to diffuse a situation without violence whenever possible – as well as the knowledge to know when force is the only way to safety.
TONS OF F-U-N !!
We never forget… kids are kids and they deserve to have some fun!
We can’t guarantee that their normal school teachers are making learning an enjoyable experience, but we DO guarantee that your kid will have a blast in our martial arts classes.
It really is a challenge to design a class that keeps kids focused on learning, respect, and discipline while still having fun… but our Dragons classes are created just for that. They are so full of ideas, activities, and games that your kids will never get bored or stagnate.
It’s also a fantastic and healthy environment for them (and you) to make friends with other like-minded students. It really is a place where laughter, cheer and happiness abound.
